LONDON - Just because J.K. Rowling has stopped writing about Harry Potter and his friends and foes doesn’t mean she has stopped thinking about them.
She told fans Monday what she thinks happened to many of the book’s characters after the final installment.
In a 90-minute live Web chat, she fielded some of the approximately 120,000 questions submitted by devotees. It was her first public comment since “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” — the last book in the series — debuted on July 21.
Rowling said she was elated to share with fans the secrets she’d been harboring since she conjured up the idea for the boy wizard during a train journey across England in 1990.
“It is great to be able to do this at last,” she said. “I’ve looked forward to it for so long!”
“Deathly Hallows” sold over 10 million copies in its first weekend. All seven books in the blockbuster series have sold a combined 335 million copies worldwide.
In the novel — which centers on Harry’s journey to kill Lord Voldemort, the most powerful dark wizard of all time — the young wizard learns of three powerful magical objects called the Deathly Hallows that, when combined, will make their owner the Master of Death, meaning he or she accepts mortality without fear.
Rowling said in the online chat the hallows were in part inspired by “The Pardoner’s Tale,” one of Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales” about greed and death.
Rowling shared with fans, many of whom said they’d read the final book several times in the last week, where she imagines their favorite characters went after the series’ conclusion.
SPOILER ALERT: Those who do not wish to know what happens to the characters after the book ends should stop reading here.
Rowling said the world was a sunnier, happier place after the seventh book and the death of Voldemort.
Harry Potter, who always voiced a desire to become an Auror, or someone who fights dark wizards, was named head of the Auror Department under the new wizarding government headed by his friend and ally, Kingsley Shacklebolt.
His wife, Ginny Weasley, stuck with her athletic career, playing for the Holyhead Harpies, the all-female Quidditch team. Eventually, Ginny left the team to raise their three children — James, Albus and Lily — while writing as the senior Quidditch correspondent for the wizarding newspaper, the Daily Prophet.
Harry’s best friend Ron Weasley joined his brother, George, as a partner at their successful joke shop, Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes. Hermione Granger, Ron’s wife and the third person of the series’ dark wizard fighting trio, furthered the rights of subjugated creatures, such as house elves, in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures before joining the magical law enforcement squad. The couple had two children — Rose and Hugo.
Luna Lovegood, Harry’s airily distracted friend with a love for imaginary animals who joins the fight against Voldemort in the Order of the Phoenix, becomes a famous wizarding naturalist who eventually marries the grandson of Newt Scamander, author of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”
And what Muggle, or non-wizard, song would have been played at the funeral of Albus Dumbledore, the most brilliant and talented wizard the world had ever known?
“Surely ‘I Did It My Way’ by Frank Sinatra,” Rowling told her fans, referring to the song “My Way,” written by Paul Anka but popularized by Sinatra, among other singers.
As the chat wrapped up, Rowling thanked readers for their loyalty to the series.
“What can I say? Thank you so much for sticking with me, and with Harry, for so long. You have made this an incredible journey for Harry’s author.”

Hundreds watched Friday as a crane lifted a muddy package from a hole in the courthouse lawn: a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere buried to celebrate Oklahoma’s 50 years of statehood.
The wrapped car — a gold-and-white two-door hardtop — appeared brown and red as it came out of the hole.
The car spent the last half-century covered in three layers of protective material and encased in a 12-by-20-foot concrete vault, supposedly tough enough to withstand a nuclear attack.
Excavators found water halfway up on the car’s fenders and evidence that water could have been to the top of the vault at one point, said Art Couch, who is heading up the unearthing project.
The first news of the water crushed event organizers, with some wiping away tears as heavy rain fell.
«It was very disappointing,» said event producer Kelly McElroy. «I think we probably anticipated there would be some water; after 50 years you don’t know what you’re going to get.
The car was placed on a flatbed truck so it could be unwrapped, spruced up and officially unveiled Friday evening at the Tulsa Convention Center. Spectators packed the streets to glimpse its journey.
Whether the car will start was unknown. Those who gathered to watch it being pulled out of the ground did not seem to care.
Also buried with it were 10 gallons of gasoline — in case internal combustion engines became obsolete by 2007 — a case of beer, and the contents of a typical woman’s handbag placed in the glove compartment: 14 bobby pins, a bottle of tranquilizers, a lipstick, a pack of gum, tissues, a pack of cigarettes, matches and $2.43.
There was also a spool of microfilm that recorded the entries of a contest to determine who would win the car: the person who guessed the closest of what Tulsa’s population would be in 2007 — 382,457 — would win.
That person, or his or her heirs, will get the car and a $100 savings account, worth about $1,200 today with interest.

A Georgia judge ordered the release Monday of a man sentenced to 10 years in prison for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl when he was 17. In addition, under the new ruling, he will not be required to register as a sex offender. Amazingly, the prosecutors are expected to appeal the decision.
His mother and attorney were in tears as they announced the decision . Wilson served over 2 years of 10-year sentence for oral sex with underage teen.
Monroe County Superior Court Judge Thomas Wilson also amended Wilson’s felony conviction to a misdemeanor without the requirement that he register as a sex offender.
Attorney B.J. Bernstein, begged “enough” as she appealed to a judge Wednesday to free him from prison, arguing that his 10-year prison sentence and inclusion on the state’s sex offender registry is grossly disproportionate and violates the Constitution.

Hey, you got a problem with how “The Sopranos” wound up? Take it up with Christopher, if you dare.“I think it’s a great ending. It’s a good way to go out,” said Michael Imperioli, who played Tony’s nephew, until he got whacked this season.
Imperioli and fellow cast members told reporters they were pleased with the finale as they walked the red carpet at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Sunday. All nine, including Arthur Nascarella (the construction company honcho Carlo), were out of character, technically speaking. But it was sometimes hard on Sunday to see where television left off and reality set in. Gandolfini and Imperioli, both in sunglasses, looked every bit the silent gangsters. They let the rest of the ensemble do the talking, and Gandolfini was first of the gang to retreat from the late-afternoon crush and disappear inside Hard Rock Live — where dinner capped off with a chocolate-bullet-riddled cake awaited.
The characteristically shy James Gandolfini, who played New Jersey mob boss Tony, was mum on his thoughts on the ending. He sported a beard and sunglasses and was sweating in the muggy South Florida weather as he smiled and waved to the large crowd of fans that gathered for his send-off.
Lorraine Bracco’s character, Dr. Jennifer Melfi, didn’t appear in the series finale. Melfi abruptly terminated Tony’s therapy in last week’s episode.
